Travel Journal - 1

One of the places I've always wanted to visit was Canada. I had so many opportunities to visit when I lived on the east coast but never went. So I think my first "big" vacation will be to Canada. I've been doing some research and I found that I think I would like to visit Calgary.

I did some research online and located some images and it reminds me so much of the east coast. I also wanted to find some places where you can rent a place instead of a hotel. One site I came upon was Rent Calgary. At first I thought it was what I was looking for but it was more for finding a home. I still looked though and found that a lot of the homes for rent or purchase in Calgary are not badly priced. Looking at the site made me wonder how easy it would be for me to just move to another country.

Travel Journals

I've decided to start a travel journal here on my blog. I've always enjoyed travleing but ever since I moved to the west coast, I haven't traveled much. So each week I'm going to feature someplace I would like to visit some day. It may be somewhere in the United States but it may also be somewhere abroad. I hope someday I will be able to visit most of these places on my list. Tonight will be my first travel journal. I hope you enjoy :-)

Cooking

The Author of this post is Solomon Dejesus

Cooking is my favorite hobby. I learned to cook when I was a little girl by watching my mom and grandma cook family dinners. When I went to college, my roommates and I would have dinner parties at our apartment and I would do all of the cooking. When I got married, my husband gained 25 pounds and he blamed it on my cooking. I love watching Food Network to learn new recipes. We recently got satellite internet from http://www.wildbluedeals.com/satellite-internet/california/s/, so I recently started looking up recipes online. I have a large cookbook of recipes I have tried and liked. I can honestly say that there are only a handful of recipes that I disliked over the years. My favorite thing to cook is dessert. I guess you could say that baking is my forte. Whenever we got to a family event where we have to bring something, I am always asked to bring dessert. I really like making cupcakes and it is a dream of mine to open up a bakery, but for now I will continue to cook for my family.

De-Stressing...

For the past few weeks I've been trying to find some simple and inexpensive ways to relieve some stress. I've been so busy at work that I have gone days without eating lunch. Not because I don't get the time to take my lunch but because I have so many things on my mind and so many things that I am working on the time goes by and I forget to eat. So each day I have been coming home and trying to find different ways to de-stress as I call it. I realized that I needed to do something when I heard my 5 year old say he was so stressed out while playing with his toys.

In the past I would drink tea, preferably ginger or lemon tea. Recently I found a new tea that I absolutely love. It's a white blueberry tea by Lipton. I'm not a Lipton tea drinker but I LOVE this tea. I also listen to calming music sometimes. Another way I have been doing it is surfing the Internet. That of course takes up a lot of my nighttime rituals but I have found that it has been helping. I'm doing something mindless and not thinking about work. I also find that reading something funny helps quite a bit. The other night I drank some milk before bed and slept like a baby. Not once did I dream about work while sleeping. Of course, there's also getting a massage but that can get expensive. Instead I find that a nice inexpensive pedicure works as well.

What are some of your tricks to relieve stress?

Shopping...In Store or Online

I have always enjoyed shopping. Well, for most things. I can look at clothing, electronics, gadgets, makeup, books and shoes all day long. There have been times when I think I may need an intervention when it comes to how much I enjoy shopping. I haven't been shopping as much lately but I often browse on the internet for different places to shop. I often look at shoes or books because for me those are the easiest for me to shop for online or to just window shop for. I came upon this wonderful website that has everything in one place. Who wouldn't want to buy everything they need in one place from the comfort of their home.

The site I found is www.become.com. This site is online shopping at its finest or power shopping at your fingertips. You can shop for anyone and everyone in your family. With the holidays coming This may be a grand idea. What's even better is that the site has giveaways, gift ideas and shopping tips.

For those who work on their feet a lot or just like to wear shoes with a lot of comfort, www.become.com has a great selection. I was checking around and found a number of pages of reasonably priced Easy Spirit shoes. For style, quality and comfort at some prices lower than in store, I found Clarks. There are lots of people I know who swear by the comfort of Clarks shoes and the life-span of their shoes. For some of us who likes to bring out the cowgirl in us there are some FABULOUS cowgirl shoes on the site. I especially like the pink one.

Brought to you by your friends at www.become.com

Wow...

Wow...today I realized that I am maturing as a parent and I didn't even know it. My only child started Kindergarten today and it feels like I was just pregnant. The last 5 years went by so quickly. Needless to say, I was in a bit of a panic for about two months. I was concerned about how he will adjust, what he will eat, will he be emotional, will he listen to his teachers, what will I pack him for lunch. Down to the wire I was yesterday (Yoda much...LOL). I hadn't bought anything to even begin to prepare lunch for him. Then I began worrying about his shoes being too big. Of all the things and times to have to worry about those two things the day before school begins and having errands to run after work. Well, I made it happen but not effectively I must say. First off, I sent my husband on a hunt for either insoles for my son's shoes or something to tide him over until maybe December. He came back with something really cute but he let him wear it out of the store which means it was scuffed and he paid too much for it. While he did tat, I went to the grocery store. I had no clue what I wanted to get.

Lesson learned after yesterday: Never go to the grocery store without an idea of what you want. You will walk out with items you do not want or need. Never wait until the last minute to plan or organize a milestone event in your life

Above average college student cooking

Guest post written by Ann May

Whenever you think about college student cooking, I'm sure that just grilling a grilled cheese sandwich or heating up some leftover pizza in a microwave is probably what you're thinking about. Well, that's definitely not the case for me. I love to cook. I have ever since I could remember. I was always helping my mom out in the kitchen one way or another and now I can actually fend for myself if I have to as a result.
I'm always finding new and good recipes though. I was doing that online the other day when I ran across the site http://Internet.clear.com. I looked through it and emailed it to my dad. He complains about his home internet service so much that I thought he could switch over to it.
I think that the cornerstone of any college student cooking is stir fry. I love throwing some veggies, chicken and a dash of soy sauce into it to really give it some flavor. Plus, it's about the easiest thing out there to fix. I'm all about quick cooking.

Find Comfort in Dr. Scholl's High Heel Insoles

After a whirlwind week of traveling from city to city for work and walking through different airports, I came home to find Dr. Scholl's For Her High Heel Insoles. These were especially a blessing to me because throughout the work week and even sometimes on the weekend I wear heels. Sometimes 4-5 inch heels when going out. Due to traveling, I had to wear sneakers or flats all week and with a high insole, by the end of the week my feet were in pain.

All last week I wore my Dr. Scholl's insoles and I felt like I was in heaven. My feet did not hurt and I was able to walk from the parking lot to meet my friends for a girls night out with no worries at all.

All I can say is 'Thank You Dr. Scholl's'. Your High Heel Insoles have become a staple in my shoe closet.

It's Almost Halloween...

What!? you say. Well I said the same thing when I walked into the store this evening and saw Halloween candy already out.
Well, if it's not too soon for the candy, it can't be too soon for the costumes either can it?
Last year my son wanted to be a mummy. I had a bright idea that I would make it myself to make it look almost real. Although I was rather proud of my costume making skills, I did hurt myself quite a bit, don't ask...LOL. This year I decided to leave it to the professionals.
This year his costume came from Wholesale Costume Club where there is a wide variety of well made Halloween costumes for kids. I am quite excited this year because he starts kindergarten and the kids actually get to show off their costumes at school. You must understand, the last few years when I would pick him up for pre-school, I would have to dress him in the car or bathroom so that he could trick or treat at my job. Not this year though. He can wear it all day.
Since the love of Star Wars is big in my house, he was excited when he saw that he could choose from multiple Star Wars costumes. The costume he chose was the Anakin Skywalker costume.
He was so excited when it came. The quality of the costume was great. It didn't feel like other costumes that I've seen in the stores. It felt like something he could wear out and it is breathable which is important. I was also very impressed with the fact that the color of the costume when it arrived matched the colors in the picture. Oftentimes, you will receive a product in the mail that was ordered online and there is a slight color variation. Not with this product, it was perfect. Because the impeccable quality and inexpensive prices of Wholesale Costume Club's costumes, I will be shopping there for his Halloween costumes from now on.

Disclaimer: Although this product was received for review purposes from Wholesale Halloween Costume Club, these are my honest opinions and I was in no other way compensated to publish this post.

Packing lightly for a multi-city business trip...

When it comes to traveling I used to enjoy it a lot. But now with all the TSA rules, it’s not much fun anymore. What’s even less fun is a multi-city trip in one week for work. Traveling from  moderate temperature to a cooler temperature to a very hot and humid temperature. My problem here is the packing and packing light.

I have never been someone to pack very light. I have a love for shoes. I think you can say it’s a borderline addiction. I often think I’m going to come home one day and my friends are going to be sitting around the room with letters in their hands for an intervention for my shoe addiction. All this being said, I always seem to think I need a pair of shoes for every outfit when I travel. Not to mention having choices for each day. Then I seem to have to pack a 2-weeks’ worth of undergarments for a 3 day trip, imagine how many I pack for a full week. You would think I have “accidents” all the time. Then of course the toiletries, the makeup, jewelry and did I say the multiple choices of outfits for each day.

So how did I manage to pack a week’s worth of traveling for work in one little carry on without having to compromise with myself? This was a challenge. These are the tWhen it comes to traveling I used to enjoy it a lot. But now with all the TSA rules, it’s not much fun anymore. What’s even less fun is a multi-city trip in one week for work.

For multi-city trips think about the weather in both places. Can you wear the same types of clothing in both cities.
take a light-weight sweater for the cooler nights but wear it on the flight.
As far as shoes go, think about whether or not you can wear the same shoe you wear on the flight to work. If you can, you have now freed up some space in your carry on.
For toiletries, make sure to get the travel size and one of each can carry you very far. Also, remember most hotel rooms provide lotion, shampoo and conditioner as well as soap so you don't have to necessarily carry those.
For makeup, choose a color that will be versatile throughout the whole week. I learned this the hard way. There's really no need to carry my whole makeup bag when I normally only wear a couple shades.

These were some of the tips I used when packing for my trip. Let me tell you, it helped tremendously. My carry-on was never too heavy, in fact it was lighter than my laptop bag. Plus I didn't have to pay to check my bag, worry that it may not reach my destination and then wait to retrieve it once I arrived.

Hope these tips will help some of you like it helped me.

GINGER: The Root to Good Health

I grew up on the island of Jamaica until I was 13 years of age. Although I’ve spent more years in the United States, there are certain things that I have carried with me through the years that I either heard or learned from my grandmothers, aunts and my mother. Some of these teachings include health remedies.

I remember growing up, whenever I had a stomachache or a headache my mother or grandmother would make a cup of ginger tea for me. Drinking ginger tea has become so commonplace for me that I have gotten my husband into drinking it and I gave a little to my son one day when he said he had a tummy ache.

In the Jamaican household ginger is a staple. Most Jamaicans will have the raw ginger root on hand but at times when you cannot find it there is also ginger powder. Most Jamaicans also cook with a lot of ginger. When I think about it, I don’t think it’s just to add flavor. I think it may also be to avoid heartburn. I know that sounds far-fetched but when I eat my mom’s cooking or most Jamaican food that has been cooked with ginger I don’t get heartburn.

There are other illnesses that Jamaican ginger is known to remedy. Some are more known than others. One of the most popular is nausea. I keep a stash of ginger tea on hand. I also like a blend of lemon and ginger. Whenever I think I may be getting a stomachache or even menstrual cramps, I drink ginger tea. When I have a really bad headache I drink ginger tea and it relaxes me. I always find myself saying to friends, when they say they feel nauseous or have a tummy ache, ‘ginger…’

In Jamaica, some older people would use ginger as an anti-inflammatory or for arthritis. Ginger is also known to fight against certain types of cancer, mainly ovarian cancer. To go along with the idea of nausea and cancer, ginger will help with chemotherapy treatments. I’ve heard that nausea is one of the side effects from chemotherapy. Using ginger, whether in tea for or capsule form before and after treatment, can reduce the feeling of nausea and vomiting during treatments.

Ginger can and is often used in many different forms. In Jamaica, it is often used as the root. Peeled and boiled for tea or for a topical rub. Ginger can also be used as a powder in hot or cold drinks and can be taken in capsule form. I will always recommend ginger to people even when they aren’t ill. I find it very soothing when I have a headache and I would rather take that than medicine.

Bryton Pick

I have found that I'm an aggressive flosser. I find myself flossing until my gums are either swollen or they start bleeding. Then I get upset because they become sensitive. I also find that I have a habit of carrying around as many dental floss as possible so that I know I can look in my purse and find one. But how attractive is it when you are flossing and flossing so aggressively that you hand looks like it's almost down your throat. Not very attractive right. Probably just as unattractive as walking around with food visibly between your teeth. Because of this I began using the dental floss/picks that are one use only. They work well but I still manage to hurt my gums with them. Lo and behold readers, I have found a new product. This product, BrytonPick is AMAZING. I didn't have swollen bleeding gums. It was easy to use and I didn't have to worry about having my hand far in my mouth. I was also able to get to my back teeth easily. The BrytonPick is convenient and has its own carrying pouch. So no worries about accidentally leaving your toothpick or floss somewhere and people will see it. BrytonPick is also reusable up to 30 days and very flexible. On top of that it comes in a number of different colors. Each family member can have their own pick.

DISCLAIMER: Although I received this product for an honest review, I was not compensated in any other way. This review is based on my honest opinion.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Rock and Learn iPhone App

The Rock and Learn Phonics Easy Reader and Multiplication Apps for the iPhone are quite easy to use. These apps were built with children of this era in mind. I say that because children from the ages of  3 and up are learning more and more to use computers, cell phones and even iPhones more than children 10 years ago did. These two apps,  Rock and Learn Phonics Easy Reader and the Multiplication, include music and speech to text reading a long with animation and dancing that children between the ages of 3 - 6 will easily follow along to.  It is well known that when music is added to mathematics lessons, the subject becomes easier to learn. I believe with the music added to this multiplication app, children will not only enjoy the learning but they will remember what they have learned more easily. These two apps are fantastic and I believe if purchased, it will be money well spent.

Good Days...Bad Days

Have you ever had one of those days where you wake up and NOTHING goes right. You can't find a decent outfit in your closet for work. Your hair doesn't look the way you want it to. You kid or kids just aren't cooperating with you and eating their breakfast or getting dressed or brushing their teeth. On days like those, you end up putting just about anything on and hope that you do not look like you got dressed in the dark; and all day you keep feeling "FRUMPY".

I've had those days. I had one of those days today. I have some tips that may help us all try to avoid the frumpy feeling.

  1. Lose weight. This is always easier said than done and never an immediate solution. What you can do is layer your clothes or wear stuff that doesn't make you look boxy.
  2. To go with not being able to lose weight fast enough, another trick is to dress to look thinner.
  3. "Modernize" your hair. Again, this is not always something easy to do but w all know someone who still wears their hair as if it's 1983.  Avoid the teasing and the hairspray. Give it a softer look.
  4. Avoid clothing that makes you look like your grandma. Not that looking like grandma is bad but if you are 25, why do you want to dress like you are 65.
  5. Last, and most definitely not least is to be comfortable in your own skin. Being comfortable with yourself helps a great deal and it also exudes confidence

These are just some ideas I thought of from years of observing people including myself. I know when my hair doesn't look right I'm in a foul mood. I have a habit of buying tops too big and then complain that they make me look boxy or frumpy.

Major Bookstore Chain closing

For those of us who enjoy reading, keep watching out for sales to come at Borders. Today we learned that one of the biggest bookstore chains in the U.S. has decided to close all their stores. That makes me sad because I always liked Borders. It also means quite a bit of people will be out of jobs so our countries unemployment will not be going down. I'm sure it will take a while but based on the article on Yahoo, it says "Borders will begin closing down its remaining stores as soon as Friday, and the liquidation is expected to run through September."

If you love a good book sale, I say start saving up because there will probably be a lot of sales from now until they close.

I'll pose a question to you readers. Do you think e-readers are what is driving bookstores out of business? I still know quite a few people who will only read regular books. I myself still buy regular books even though I have an e-reader.

What do you think? Here's the article if you are interested http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Borders-Calls-Off-Auction-nytimes-1678947798.html?x=0

Downy UNSTOPABLES

What are Downy UNSTOPABLES you may ask. I consider them laundry fabulousness. I got these in the mail from VocalPoint one Saturday and began using them in my laundry. They give off the most amazing summer breeze scent to me I fell in love with the product. It reminded me of when my mom used to have clothes drying on the clothesline in Jamaica. Just refreshing. The scent also lasts for quite a while.Your linen closet will smell like you've been using candles in there it smells so good.

Downy UNSTOPABLES just hit select stores but by joining Vocalpoint, you may have the opportunity to another exclusive Downy UNSTOPABLES sample offer soon.
